Homelessness Week each year aims to shine a spotlight on issues faced by people experiencing homelessness and is a time to talk about the actions we need to take to bring about positive change and an end to homelessness.
Since the lifting of the moratorium on rental increases and evictions in March 2021 and a shortage of suitable housing options, more Western Australians than ever before have been or felt at risk of homelessness.
Homelessness is a complex issue that can impact anyone. It is estimated that over 9,000 Western Australians experience homelessness every night, a third of whom are Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander people. The theme for Homelessness Week 2021, running from 1–7 August, is ‘Everybody needs a home’. The program run by Shelter WA, who coordinate Homelessness Week in Western Australia, has the theme of ‘Housing solutions to end homelessness’.
All Paths Lead to a Home: Western Australia’s 10-Year Strategy on Homelessness 2020–2030 is a whole-of-community plan for reducing homelessness and ending rough sleeping in Western Australia.
Significant progress has been made to deliver the Strategy since its release in December 2019 and the Strategy is already transforming the way that Government and the community sector work to support vulnerable people.
The week aims to highlight the solutions that can be adopted, in both the short-term and long-term and to also to take a moment to reflect, reground and look at where to from here.
