We can’t get enough of the homemade teriyaki sauce at JBento, the popular little Japanese joint in Queens Road. Their bento boxes are the best! Sooooo fresh and just perfect for lunch, dinner or takeaway. And on Saturdays between 8-11am you can grab a bento brekky box which includes poached egg or omelette, pickles, miso soup, fish, nori, rice and vegetables. JBento is open until 9pm every day except Sundays.
Picnic at Deep Water Point
This grassy locale at Deep Water Point is hard to beat at any time of the day. There’s everything from a boat ramp to a long stretch of sandy beach. You’ll find barbecues, toilets, bike racks, a Dome café, the iconic jetty, plenty of parking, scooter or bike paths and a beaut adventure playground that will entertain for hours.
Art trail
We love the wonderful series of mosaics by Polish-born contemporary Australian artist Danka Scholtz von Lorenz. There are five of them embedded in the footpath along the river expressing the past and present significance of each site. Themes explored include jetties, water sports, flora and fauna, leisure and transport. Spend half an hour or make an afternoon of it by wandering among the other amazing artworks along the City of Melville’s Art Trail. And just across the road don’t miss the ceramic steppingstones created by students at Mount Pleasant and St Benedict’s Catholic primary schools.
Coffee’s up
When we need a caffeine fix it’s hard to go past Coco Belle Espresso Bar on Queens Road. As well as Five Senses Coffee, they do a heap of unique menu items using local produce. It’s a funky space and always buzzing. You can even leave your keep-cup with them and phone through an order. Open 7am-3pm Sunday to Thursday and from 7am-10pm on Saturdays.
